A greywater recycling system collects used water from the washing machine, shower and bath and recycles it for use in the garden or for flushing toilets. Water savings vary, but can be around 30%, or even more if used extensively for gardens.
Greywater recycling systems are usually found in rural residential areas like Waiheke Island, where there are some dense housing areas, no mains sewerage system and water is supplied only from rainfall.
There are some concerns around the health risks of using greywater systems in domestic situations due to possible contamination of drinking water and contact with collected greywater that has become septic. For more information you should contact your local council.
The system and its installation must also comply with the Building Code.
