What to look for when buying a new computer

You can make a difference when purchasing a new computer by choosing one that will have less environmental impacts, or by buying second-hand to give used products a new life.

  • Choose electronics that are energy efficient. Look for the ENERGY STAR mark to help you save power.
  • Choose printers that are capable of printing double-sided copies and can take reusable or remanufactured toner cartridges.
  • Avoid monitors with cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Liquid crystal display (LCD) screens are more energy efficient than CRTs and do not used leaded glass.
  • Consider leasing your computer. With a leased product, your computer is returned to the vendor when it is time to upgrade. This encourages the vendor to take responsibility for the waste created. Check the disposal policy of your vendor.
  • Look for durable products. Before buying a new product, look into its repair history and reliability. Product reviews can be found in magazines such as Consumer as well as on websites and blogs. Consider an extended warranty or maintenance contract.
  • Look for equipment that can be upgraded. For example, see if the computer can accommodate additional memory chips or larger hard drives.
  • If you are buying a printer, copier, scanner or fax machine, look for one with the Environmental Choice logo. For a list of products which have the Environmental Choice logo check out the Environmental Choice website.

Hints/Tips

  • Look for the ENERGY STAR label on new computers – this will help save you money on power over the life of your computer. You can find a list of ENERGY STAR computers and monitors on the ENERGY STAR website.
  • Take your unwanted computer equipment to eDay. eDay is a drive-through recycling event that gives you the opportunity to recycle old computers in an environmentally sustainable way. The eDay website has all the details.
  • List your unwanted stuff on Freecycle. There are Freecyle groups operating around New Zealand. You can list unwanted goods to give away – no money changes hands.
