20 March 2009
This Sunday, 22 March, is World Water Day. World Water Day is a good opportunity for us all to consider our water use.
While in New Zealand we have a relative abundance of fresh water, it is not always in the right place at the right time.
Using water efficiently not only helps the environment, it also saves money. There is a substantial cost involved in bringing fresh water to the tap. These costs come from building dams, treating and pumping the water. You pay for these costs through your rates, or in some council areas directly by a user charge.
There are many simple ways you can save water, such as running full loads of washing and not overwatering your garden. A hose can easily deliver up to 20 litres of water every minute, which is equivalent to a bathtub every five minutes, or 12 bathtubs an hour.
If you are in the Auckland region look out for water saving tips from your water supply company in your local paper.
