Electric cars may be coming soon to a town near you. The Mitsubishi iMiEV will be part of a trial in New Zealand over the coming months. It is the first mass-produced new-generation electric vehicle to come to New Zealand. The four-door hatchback has a maximum speed of 130 km/h and a driving range of up to 160 km. Its fuel costs are one-third the price of a petrol vehicle.
Electric cars are far more energy efficient than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, quieter, and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is especially important in New Zealand, where transport makes up 18% of our greenhouse gas emissions.
The iMiEV evaluation programme, a partnership between Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand and Meridian Energy, runs until late March and will involve demonstrations around the country.
