Get ready for New Zealand’s spring clean

27 August 2008

As New Zealand will soon (hopefully) wake from its winter slumber, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get stuck into ‘Clean Up New Zealand Week’ this September. Organised by Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB), the event runs from 5th – 12th of September and is designed to remove litter from across New Zealand. At the same time ‘Graffiti Free Week’ will tackle tagging.

Both these events take aim at rubbish and graffiti in New Zealand communities in urban and rural areas. Individual groups and businesses cleaning up their own work places and neighbourhoods will hopefully build momentum and form positive habits.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful coordinates the event and provides equipment and advice for the clean up. Bags and gloves are provided free to community groups and schools, while KNZB asks businesses to make a small contribution towards the cost of their equipment.

“This clean up is a chance for New Zealanders to tidy our backyard, to put the clean back into clean and green”, says KNZB Clean Up Week organiser, Barry Lucinsky.

More than 1.3 million Kiwis participated in last year’s Clean Up Week, and the organisers are hoping for even more this year. For more information, or to register for the event, check out the KNZB Clean Up Week website
