Capital city plays host to World Environment Day celebrations

5 June 2008

Wellington was the proud host of a multitude of celebrations in the week leading up to World Environment Day on 5 June 2008.

The events highlighted the need to kick the world’s carbon habit. The Green Ribbon Awards on 3 June honoured the outstanding contributions of individuals, community organisations, businesses, and local government to sustaining and enhancing New Zealand’s unique environment.

The United Nations Art for the Environment exhibition, entitled ‘Moving Towards a Balanced Earth: Kick the Carbon Habit’, was launched on 4 June at Te Papa in Wellington. San Francisco’s Natural World Museum curated the exhibition in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme and the Ministry for the Environment. It features works of art from 27 artists representing 20 countries. The exhibition runs until 7 September 2008.

On 5 June, the winners of the prestigious International Children’s Painting Competition were announced by Prime Minister Helen Clark. The winners came from Asia and the Pacific, West Asia, Africa, North America, and Latin America to collect their prizes. The winning entries are part of an exhibition of 64 paintings from children around the globe. The exhibition runs until the end of August at Te Papa.
