The Prime Minister today invited all New Zealanders to join her in taking steps for sustainability when she launched the Sustainability Challenge at Otari School, Wellington.

Helen Clark was the first to register a sustainable step, deciding to take reusable bags to the supermarket. Environment Minister, Trevor Mallard registered a sustainable step of buying products with less packaging, or with packaging that is able to be recycled.
Everyone can play their part by choosing actions that are workable and can be incorporated into their lifestyles. You can pledge your steps online at My next step. The challenge follows new research that shows 64% of New Zealanders say they are doing some things to help look after the environment and would like to do more.
Everyone who signs up for the challenge goes into a weekly draw to win a Centameter. A Centameter lets you monitor your power use and can help you make some big changes to your power bill.
As the case studies on this website show, it’s easy to take action. Simple steps such as switching off your lights or walking short distances instead of driving can also save us money and make us fitter.
This website also features lots of information and ideas to help you make your next step and includes opportunities for participation through competitions, discussion forums, films and blogs.
