I'm having a problem with pesky little weeds in my veggie garden. I can't put a weed mat down as the garden is already established so thought a good mulch may do the trick...??
Was planning on re-mulching for the water saving benefits too. Does anyone have a favorite mulch to suggest that would do both - get rid of weeds and reduce watering?

Sorry runningchick, I can't suggest a good garden mulch. I don't even have a vegetable patch at the moment because we've recently moved into a new flat and we're being careful what we ask the landlord for - so far I haven't been brave enough to propose digging up a patch of the beautifully manicured front lawn to plant cabbages!
Perhaps someone else can suggest a good mulch?

I've had good results with pea-straw. Available from garden centres like Palmers. Some people don't like the look of beige straw on the garden though I've found it adds to the rural look of the vege garden. Easy and clean to apply, and remove when necessary or just dig it in to the soil when you re-do the garden.

Welcome to sustainability.govt.nz verity. Thanks for the tip about pea straw. I don't know much about mulch, but I think the straw could look quite cool.
