Labels on Fruit

A pet hate is finding fruit labels in my garden. They go through the compost and seem to survive for ever. Does anyone know who I could approach to request a change to biodegradeable labels? thanks

Kia ora. I don't have this problem as I grow my own fruit and steer clear of anything with a label on it.
My suggestions are.
Contact the grower or business selling the fruit with labels and make the suggestion about biodegradable labels.
Grow your own or buy from a local farmers market.

Hope this helps.

CTristram, those labels do seem to last forever! But there's one thing worse than finding a label on your apple... that's finding half a label on your apple!

Danica, I would love to grow my own fruit but unfortunately I'm renting so I'm never at the same place long enough. I have tried growing fruit trees in containers but I can't keep them watered enough over summer. I have planted fruit trees at some places I have lived so I hope future tenants will enjoy the produce. (Unfortunately my last landlord dug up the back yard to build another house and my beautiful garden was laid to waste.)

Fruit labels need to be able to withstand frequent misting while the fruit is on display in the shops, so a plain paper label might not be the best. Also I like the fact that I can remove the plastic label in one piece and not leave sticky adhesive behind - I don't know if a paper label would work so well.

I have heard of new technology that uses a laser to burn a logo into the surface of the fruit but I have never seen this on fruit in the shops.

How on earth did we manage in the old days when fruit wasn't individually labelled!?

Hi There,

Try taking the labels off at the supermarket and sticking them one on top of the other on the bench edge in the produce department (clearly I don't work in a supermarket!), hopefully everyone else will add to your pile and a 'growth' will appear - sending a very clear message to the supermarket that will then (fingers crossed) get sent to the poduce companies. :o)
