Eco friendly bean bag fillers

Does anyone have ideas of what you can fill a bean bag with other than the enormous mountain of polystyrene balls that are usually used? Or, if you do have to use the polystyrene balls, is it possible to get recycled ones?

Hmmm... interesting question! Of course there are those little bean-bag things you heat in the microwave to make soothing heat packs. They are usually filled with wheat, beans or rice. But something like that on a bean-bag scale would be enormously heavy and you would have to make sure you kept it dry or you might end up with your own rice paddy in your living room!

Products often arrive at retailers' stores packed in polystyrene 'beans' which you could probably collect for free if you found a friendly supplier (who would probably be glad to get rid of them). But they are bulkier than the little balls you usually get in a bean bag.

Another option is a product from potatopak called 'pop starch'. Click on this link and go to the bottom of the page: http://www.potatoplates.com/product-range.htm

I don't know how suitable this would be for your purpose - perhaps get in touch and ask them for advice.
