Compact disc recycling

Okies, I think I've exhausted the many craft related suggestions for recycling CDs (like how many coasters, lampstands, bird scarers, christmas decorations etc do you really need?), and I still have 100s of old CDs at home and through work to get rid of. Does anyone know of a local recycler who can strip CDs DVDs back to useful components again? In Australia http://www.discstation.com.au/category.pasp?categoryid=104 discstation claims to do this... but I don't know of anyone doing it in NZ. There has to be better way than the landfill. Thoughts or even more craft ideas are welcomed! Si

Hi Si50 and welcome to our community. Good question about what to do with those old pesky CDs and DVDs. I'm not sure of the best way to go about trying to recycle them, but a good start might be to check with your local electronic waste recycler and see if they have any information.

I've also heard that Stebbing Recording Centre takes old CDs, crushes them up and sends them away for recycling. I'm not sure if this is the case, so I'd recommend calling them and asking nicely to check.

Hope that helps!

How about video tapes? Does anyone know if/where they can be recycled?
