Eco-friendly renovating

Does anyone have any tips for eco-friendly renovating? We are doing up our unit and are doing obvious things like recycling wood, not replacing what we can re-use etc, but what about cleaning paintbrushes? Is there a better way to clean them than endless amounts of rinsing? And we need to throw out our old cotton curtains - is there somewhere the recycles material?

Have a look at some of the links I've posted on the eco-friendly home building thread - there will be a fair amount of overlap there!

The only thing I can suggest when it comes to cleaning paintbrushes is that you do it in a bucket of water rather than running them under the tap. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

What condition are the curtains in? If they are still in reasonable wear, donate them to a second hand store. I've personally made dresses/skirts out of old curtains, so I'm sure other people would like to too :)

Another option for your curtains is donating them to a curtain bank - like a food bank, they get distributed to low income families. I'm not sure where you live but there is one in Christchurch www.cea.co.nz and also one in the Waikato www.heet.co.nz. There may be others around too.
