Wood and pellet burners

Wood burners

Wood burners can be an efficient way to heat your home and can often be cheaper than using electricity or gas heating. One thing to be aware of with wood burners is the air pollution they can cause.

Try to use plantation grown wood in your wood burner that is well seasoned and has been kept dry. Dry wood burns more efficiently and cleanly.

For more information check out the wood burner section on the ENERGYWISETM website and the Ministry for the Environment wood burner information.

Pellet burners

Pellet burners are a clean and efficient form of heating

Pellet burners are a clean and efficient form of heating that use compressed ‘wood pellets’ of waste wood shavings as their fuel instead of solid logs. Pellet burners are limited to only burning pellets and cannot be readily changed to burning logs.

Most pellet fire owners use approximately one tonne of fuel a season. One ton of pellet fuel is approximately 1.2m3 and takes up about one third of the space of the equivalent firewood.

Pellet burners and wood pellets are widely available at home heating and solid fuel stores. Wood pellets will also soon be available to order on-line.
