Choosing building materials

When building or renovating, try to use materials that have been produced with the environment in mind. Here are a few tips to help you do this!

Look for the environmental choice tick

The environmental choice tick tells you that a product has been made with the environment in mind. Visit the Environmental Choice New Zealand website for more information.

Buy local products

Support your community and buy local products that have travelled less to get to you.

Use low or non-toxic products

Many building materials contain toxins that are harmful to your health and the environment. For more information on choosing non-toxic products visit the Smarter Homes painting and decorating webpages.

Choose high quality materials

Use high quality materials that are more durable and don’t need replacing as often.

Re-use and recycle as much as possible

Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and use second hand or recycled materials where possible.
