Sustainable New Year's Resolutions

What are your New Year’s resolutions? I always make the resolution to be happy – cheesy, yes, but pretty important, I think! One of my more concrete resolutions is to turn off appliances at the wall when I’m done with them. It sounds so easy, yet I’m very bad about remembering. I like the convenience of walking into my room, switching on the stereo and flopping on the bed to chill out for an half an hour or so. When I’m done, I switch it off on the machine and do something else. I think I’ll need to put a sticky note on it to remind me to turn it off, but hey, whatever works, huh?

Another resolution is to start composting at my new flat. My previous flat had a composting system in place, which was great, but I’m going to have to set up something from scratch. I’ll need to buy a bin and then ask my new flatmates to participate, but they seem fairly open-minded which is great.

My third resolution of a “sustainable” nature is to grow my own veges. I have various herbs, a lemon tree and strawberry plants in pots, but it would be nice to grow more of my own food. Since I’m flatting it will be difficult to plant a vege garden, so I’m thinking of planting more things in pots. Jamie Oliver tells me it can be done, so it must be possible!

Post-its are a fantastic way to remember stuff - I've got them all over the place!

I want to grow more of my own food, too. Potatoes look like a great place to start, since you can get a huge amount of them in quite a small area.

Speaking of flats, what do you do with your compost if you don't have a garden, and your landlord won't let you make one? There's bush behind our house, but a lot of blackberry which would make it hard to spread compost around (not to mention that it's very steep!).
