So many New Zealand homes don't have adequate insulation. I think we've all heard by now that some Dunedin student flats are colder than the inside of a fridge in winter. I can believe that – having visited friends down there in my second year at uni I woke up to ice on the inside of the windows.
I lived in Dannevirke for a couple of years, and while it's considerably north of Dunedin, it wasn't particularly tropical in the middle of winter either. Two duvets, a possum skin rug and a cat firmly wedged between you still makes for a chilly night. We decided to combat this problem by installing our own insulation. I'm not the most hands-on sort of a person, but if I can cut up Batts and pass them up to someone in the ceiling I reckon most people can.
We managed to install Batts above our lounge and bedroom – the two main areas we used to heat, and I definitely noticed a difference. On our dubious temperature rating scale, one (cat wedged under all three layers and crawling into pyjamas) to five (cat elsewhere) we began registering at about a three or four – (cat on top of duvet – until at least breakfast time).

Sarah, I'm interested to know whether the home where you installed insulation was rented - and if so, what arrangement did you come to with your landlord? I would like to think landlords would be happy to provide the Pink Batts in exchange for the tenant's labour for installation, but so far I have not found a landlord who is willing to do that. Maybe I've just had an unfortunate run of landlords?
By the way, I love the photo of the cat asleep on the blanket - it's a very contented looking animal (I only wish I had that lifestyle!)

The house was actually owned by the guy I was living with, unfortunately. I like to think that landlords would be happy to pay for insulation if it was installed for free - disappointing that you've had a bad run :(
