I was lucky enough to go to EECA’s ENERGYWISETM advance screening of The 11th Hour last night.
I’m a fairly emotional person, so I have to admit I cried and felt pretty miserable through the first hour or so as experts in a diverse range of fields detailed how exponential human growth and rampant consumerism is causing mass extinctions; polluting our air, land and waterways; collapsing ecosystems; causing illness and dozens of other negatives.
The Earth can and will cope with all these changes – it has dealt with other catastrophes, yet at what cost? What will be left? It amazes me, (and the film-makers), that there are still those out there that think that climate change is a myth. Yes, climate change is a natural process, but we have dramatically altered this.
Amongst all this negativity, what I loved about this documentary was that it ended on a positive note. Humans may be the problem, but we’re also solution. The film challenges humanity to rethink and reshape our global activity using technology, making informed decisions and conserving our ecosystems. We have the chance now to change our future – to live our lives not dominating the planet, but coexisting with it.
