For Christmas this year I am contemplating getting my parents a worm farm. To be honest, they’re not that excited by the idea as yet, but I plan to convert them over the next couple of weeks. My friend’s Dad was given one a couple of years ago and is moderately obsessed with it, he goes out every day to check that his pets have enough food and moisture. He has a food grinder in his shed where he grinds up the vegetable peelings into pulp so that the worms can break down the rubbish more easily.
I can’t quite imagine Mum and Dad becoming quite so focussed, but I do think they will warm to it in the end. They currently use an insinkerator, which as well as terrifying any household pet, it also isn’t the most efficient way to get rid of organic rubbish. I’m hoping that as Mum and Dad are such keen gardeners that they will be converted. I’m wondering if it might be easiest to start with a compost bin – maybe an easier launching pad into the world of organic waste disposal. Any thoughts?
I’m planning on buying a couple of my closest friends a goat or a chicken or two. I think they’ll get a real kick out of getting a message saying that their Christmas present has helped someone else out. Check out Oxfam Unwrapped Gifts.
Giving sustainably takes some thought but feels good! I'd love to hear what sustainable gifts others are buying/making/doing for friends and whanau this Christmas.
